What is the difference between vitamin K1 and vitamin K2?

Vitamin K is crucial for babies, especially for blood clotting. Although they belong to the same family, their origin and function in the body are different.

Here is an overview of the main differences:

1. Origin and sources
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone): It comes primarily from plant foods, especially leafy green vegetables (spinach, broccoli). It is the main form of vitamin K that we consume in our diet.

Vitamin K2 (menaquinone): It is produced by bacteria. It is found in fermented foods (e.g. cheese, sauerkraut) and in animal products. It is also partially produced by bacteria in our intestines.

2. Main function
K1: It is concentrated mainly in the liver, where it activates proteins necessary for blood clotting. Without it, there is a risk of bleeding.

K2: It travels more to the bones and blood vessels. It helps direct calcium directly to the bones and teeth and prevents its deposition in the blood vessels (called calcification).

Why is this important for babies?
Newborns face one specific problem: they are born with very low levels of vitamin K.

Insufficient transfer: Only a minimum amount of vitamin K reaches the baby through the placenta.

Sterile intestine: Babies do not yet have the “right” bacteria in their intestines that would naturally produce K2.

Breast milk: Contains relatively little vitamin K.
